Talking to Charismatic Agents: General guidelines for conversational characters

نویسنده

چکیده

This paper provides an overview of the interactive autonomous agents currently being developed for the Charismatic system. The paper discusses the conversational requirements for agents within the system and provides an overview of the styles of conversational interaction which may be supported in similar systems where a user can talk to autonomous agents and avatars. The paper presents guidelines for features present in conversations between humans to help designers of interactive autonomous avatars think about the mechanisms that they may need to employ for more natural user-avatar communication. Initially envisaged as a one-agent-to-one-user dialogue system, extensions are discussed that allow many-to-many-agents dialogue and communication. Population of virtual worlds with such communicating agents could potentially lead to a more interesting interaction with the user as the system moves away from restricted performances to dynamic village scenes.

Talking to Virtual Humans: Dialogue Models and Methodologies for Embodied Conversational Agents

Virtual Humans are artificial characters who look and act like humans, but inhabit a simulated environment. One important aspect of many virtual humans is their communicative dialogue ability. In this paper we outline a methodology for study of dialogue behavior and construction of virtual humans. We also consider three architectures for different types of virtual humans that have been built at...

Increasing Cultural Awareness by Games with Embodied Conversational Agents

In this paper we describe a research project that aims at providing a learning environment with virtual characters to train culture-specific nonverbal behavior in order to avoid unnecessary irritations in cross-cultural communication. It is shown that the use of virtual characters in the form of embodied conversational agents is beneficial for such an application. After a general description of...

Talking to thimble jellies: children²s conversational speech with animated characters

As spoken language systems become more conversational in nature, new interfaces are emerging with animated characters that are designed to elicit and manage a conversation with the user. In the present study, the spoken language of ten 6-to-10year-old children was compared while interacting with an animated character in the I SEE! interface and again while interacting with a human adult. Analys...

Automatically Generating Eye Motion in Virtual Agents

Eye Motion has a fundamental role in verbal and non-verbal communication among people. It can express emotions and regulate the flow of conversation. For this reason, it is very important that these movements can be realistic in Computer Animation’s applications, such as virtual humans in general and game/movies characters. This paper presents a model for producing eye movements in synthetic ag...

Building Spoken Dialogue Systems for Believable Characters

Believable characters are defined in the arts as autonomous characters with personality, capable of showing emotion, being self-motivated rather than eventdriven, adaptable to new situations, maintaining consistency of expression, and able to interact with other characters. These requirements impose a number of conversational capabilities on a spoken dialogue interface with a believable charact...
